In 1963, the Beatles released their album "Please Please Me," and news of their explosive popularity in Britain was, of course, almost unknown to me, and hardly known in Japan. We did not have a television at home, and the music I heard on the radio was mostly Japanese folk songs or popular songs.
Soon after I entered junior high school, my parents bought me my own radio. I listened to it every day, and one day I heard "Yesterday" being played. That was when I learned that the song had become a huge hit in both Britain and the United States. Before long, Beatles songs were being played on the radio almost every day. I could not understand much of the English lyrics, but I was fascinated by their rhythms and melodies.

The long-awaited Beatles concert in Japan was finally broadcast from Tokyo on July 3, 1966. I watched it excitedly at home on a black-and-white television. The next day at school, everyone was talking about the concert. Along with their music, their "mop-top" hairstyles became a major topic of conversation. I think this concert made the Beatles known throughout Japan.
Many students were divided into two groups: "Beatles fans" and "Ventures fans." The Ventures were an American instrumental band, and after their first visit to Japan in 1965, an unprecedented electric-guitar boom swept across the country. At that time, I was still more of a Ventures fan. However, the Beatles had both powerful rhythmic songs and beautiful melodic songs, and I gradually became captivated by their music.
When did you become a Beatles fan?
In my first year of high school, I met an unforgettable friend, Ito-kun. He had all of the Beatles' LP records, and he copied them for me onto cassette tapes. I listened to them every day, singing along while playing the guitar, which I had just begun to learn. Every song sounded wonderful, and the number of my favorite songs grew day by day.
When I was in my second year of high school, I went on a school trip. I brought with me a cassette tape copy of songs from "Abbey Road." At an inn in Kyoto, several friends and I shouted again and again the drum intro by Ringo and the line "come together, right now, over me!" from "Come Together." I will never forget that moment.
When I learned that "Let It Be" would be the Beatles' final album, I listened to it with a slightly sad feeling while studying for my university entrance exams. Around that time, I had also begun to like bands such as the Rolling Stones, Chicago, and the Eagles. Since university life was waiting for me, I was full of excitement about trying new things. I felt like saying "thank you for everything" to the four Beatles, but I also expected that they would surely show us "new musical activities" in the years to come.

待ちに待ったビートルズの日本公演は、1966年7月3日、ついに東京で開催されました。私は自宅で白黒テレビでその公演を興奮しながら見ていました。翌日、学校では誰もがコンサートの話をしていましたが、音楽と同時にかれらの髪型”マッシュルームカット”が話題になっていました。このコンサートをきっかけに、ビートルズが日本中に知れ渡ったと思います。
多くの生徒は「ビートルズファン」と「ベンチャーズファン」の2つのグループに分かれていました。ベンチャーズはアメリカの演奏中心のバンドですが、1965年の初来日公演をきっかけに、日本中で空前のエレキギター・ブームになっていました。当時私はまだ「ベンチャーズファン」でしたが、ビートルズの音楽には、激しいリズムの曲も美しいメロディの曲もあり、ビートルズの魅力に取りつかれていきました。
あなたはいつころビートルズのファンになりましたか？
高校1年生で忘れれない友人(イトウ君)に出会いました。彼はビートルズのレコード（LP盤）をすべてもっており、それらをカセットテープにコピーしてくれました。私はこれを毎日聞いて、はじめたばかりのギターを弾きながら歌っていました。どの曲もすばらしく、好きな曲が毎日増えました。
高校2年生になって修学旅行に行きましたが、私は「Abbey Road」の曲をカセットテープにコピーしてもっていきました。京都旅館で数名の友人と「Come Together」のリンゴのドラムのイントロと"come together, right now, over me!"を何度も大声で叫びました。このことも忘れられません。
『Let It Be』がビートルズの最後のアルバムになると知った時、大学入試の勉強をしながら、少し寂しい気持ちで聴きました。この頃には、ローリング・ストーンズ、シカゴ、イーグルスといったバンドも好きになり始めていました。私は大学生活が待っているので、新しいことに挑戦する気持ちでいっぱいでした。ビートルズの4人には、お疲れ様という気持ちもありましたが、きっと新たな音楽活動を見せてくれるという期待をしていました。
